10-Second Detox Ritual: Tongue Scraping
Did January bring detox to your mind? You should now integrate this ultra-fast and simple Ayurvedic detox ritual into your morning routine: tongue scraping. In just 10 seconds, you can detoxify your body. Find out here why your tongue is white in the morning and how tongue scraping can positively impact your health holistically.
Brushing teeth in the morning and evening is almost automatic for most people. In Ayurveda, however, brushing teeth is only one component of the daily cleansing ritual. Tongue scraping and oil pulling are just as much a fixed part of the Ayurvedic morning routine – and have been for several thousand years.
If you read on, you will find out why you, too, should incorporate the ancient ritual of tongue scraping into your oral hygiene routine.
The Tongue: Detoxification Organ and Mirror of Your Health
Did you know that your body detoxifies through your tongue? These residues appear as coatings on the tongue.
In Ayurvedic medicine, the tongue is considered an extension of the gastrointestinal tract. The condition of the tongue and its coating help in assessing general health and provide clues about imbalances.
In Ayurveda as well as in Western medicine, tongue coatings are considered excreted waste products and toxins from the body. By regularly removing these coatings (similar to the coatings on teeth), residues, bacteria, and toxins that you would otherwise reintroduce into your body when drinking, eating, and swallowing are removed.
The effects of tongue scraping:
- Taste sensation improves
- Bad breath is prevented
- Digestion and detoxification of the digestive system are stimulated
- The immune system is strengthened
- Overall oral hygiene is improved
And all this with only 10 seconds of effort!
Tongue Scraping - It's That Simple and Fast
Start tongue scraping in the morning on an empty stomach right after waking up, before drinking anything and before brushing your teeth. This way, you remove all toxins and bacteria that have accumulated overnight, instead of swallowing them again.
- Stick out your tongue.
- Place the tongue scraper as far back on the tongue as is comfortable for you and pull it several times with light pressure to the tip of the tongue. Caution: Do not apply too much pressure so that you do not damage any of the important taste buds. Tongue scraping should never hurt!
- Repeat the process in different places to remove as much coating as possible from your tongue.
- You can briefly clean the tongue scraper under running water in between.
- Finally, rinse your mouth thoroughly several times. Et voila!
It is best to clean your tongue in the morning and evening, as this is when the most coating has accumulated on your tongue. The effective ritual is so fast and simple that you will soon do it automatically, just like brushing your teeth – at least that's what happened to us.
What You Need: A Tongue Scraper
To scrape your tongue, you can use a tongue scraper or simply an inverted tablespoon. Brushing your tongue with your toothbrush would only spread the toxins instead of removing them.
Make sure that the tongue scraper is not made of plastic, as your oral mucosa could absorb harmful plastics from the plastic, thus burdening your body! Furthermore, we should all avoid plastic as much as possible to avoid further polluting the earth and especially the oceans. Please also opt for sustainability here!
We recommend using a tongue scraper made of 100% copper.
Copper has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Germs and bacteria are eliminated on the surface. In addition, copper ions are able to bind to sulfur compounds and thus eliminate them.
Copper is also very durable. The high-quality metal does not rust.
However, discoloration may occur on the tongue scraper, and a patina may form. You can occasionally remove this patina with vinegar and salt. Afterward, wash the tongue scraper with water and dry it.
If you take good care of your 100% copper tongue scraper, you can use it for a lifetime.
